Sonu Nigam Boycott Row: Time for Kashmir to Rise Above Fringe Voices and Choose Progress

The Shining Kashmir Exclusive

The recent social media trend calling for the boycott of singer Sonu Nigam’s show in Srinagar has once again exposed how a small section of fringe voices attempts to derail Kashmir’s journey toward peace and normalcy. While the people of Jammu and Kashmir overwhelmingly aspire for prosperity, development, and dignity — these elements thrive on disruption, chaos, and confusion. Every time the valley takes a step forward, they attempt to pull it two steps back, using religion and emotion as tools to divide and distract.

Kashmir is blessed with immensely talented youth whose creativity and skill have earned global recognition. Yet, it is disheartening to see that because of these fringe elements, Kashmiris are often denied a platform to celebrate their own talent. Qazi Touqeer — one of Kashmir’s own — is scheduled to perform the opening act at this concert, but some so-called “boycott heroes” are even trying to choke and muzzle the voice of their own kin. This is truly unfortunate. A collective voice must rise against such radical attempts so that peace, art, and harmony can find their rightful place in Kashmir’s social fabric.

These habitual disruptors thrive on unrest and uncertainty — for them, every shutdown and backlash is a business model, not a belief. Every time Kashmir begins to heal, to attract tourists, and to open new avenues of livelihood, they invent new controversies to halt progress. For them, Kashmir’s pain is a profession; for ordinary Kashmiris, it’s a daily struggle. The question every conscious citizen must ask is — how long will we allow a handful of people to decide the fate of millions who want peace and prosperity?

Tourism is not just about leisure; it is the lifeline of thousands of families. From shikara owners and hoteliers to artisans and taxi drivers — every tourist contributes directly to Kashmir’s economy. Boycotting cultural events, concerts, or initiatives designed to attract visitors is effectively boycotting the bread and butter of our own people.

If Muslim-majority countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates can promote tourism and host concerts for economic growth, why should such initiatives be vilified in Kashmir? These nations, considered the heartlands of Islam, have realized that cultural engagement and economic progress go hand in hand. They create artificial attractions to draw tourists — while we, blessed with unmatched natural beauty, are letting negativity drive visitors away.

It is time for Kashmiris to rise above the divisive theatrics of fringe elements. Our collective responsibility is to protect the valley’s peace, dignity, and economic stability — not to surrender it to those who benefit from chaos.

Kashmir’s real strength lies in its hospitality, harmony, and heart. The common Kashmiri deserves a stable livelihood, a secure environment, and opportunities for their children — not the constant cycle of fear and disruption.

Let’s be clear: the only “boycott” Kashmir needs today is of those who call for boycotts — the ones who sabotage progress and manipulate emotions for personal or political gain.

Peace is not just a dream for Kashmir; it’s a necessity for its survival and success. It’s time to silence the noise, reject the hate, and let the valley finally breathe in peace and pride.
